About

We have been established as a community group since February 2012 and have charity status. We originated from a Broxtowe Borough Council project targeted at an area identified in need of health promotion. Fun dance and exercise sessions are provided for men and women aged 60+ in and around the Brinsley and Eastwood districts throughout the year.We are run by a committee of volunteers who raise funds, plan and organise the sessions and help everything run smoothly for the benefit of the membership. We hold a yearly AGM and regularly consult members to ensure we are providing the kind of activities everyone enjoys. We are a friendly and welcoming group who aim to make sure new members feel happy and at ease. We laugh a lot and enjoy meeting up for the sessions. Refreshments at the end gives us time for a chat and to make new friendships.Local doctors often recommend their patients to join our activities for the following benefits:->Dance exercise helps maintain balance, strength and general fitness.>Social activities help to prevent feelings of loneliness and isolation>Exercise with like minded people promotes mental well beingIf you are a potential member who would like to try out a session please get in touch through our Contact Us page

Projects

'The Iron Giant' 2024This project involved creating a live dance work which toured to community groups and care homes in our local area. The piece was inspired by Bennerley Viaduct, one of the only Victorian viaducts left in the UK. We used the structure as inspiration for the movement we generated and creatively explored how this 60ft high ex railway line could inspire us now.Made with funding thanks to Notts County Coucil Local Improvement Scheme

‘Only Connect’ (2022-2023)This project has allowed us to reconnect with community groups that we are linked to within our immediate area. After the pandemic we, like lots of community groups, became disconnected with our local links and have been fortunate enough to be funded by the Levelling Up Fund through Broxtowe Borough Council and Inspire’s Multiply programme through Nonsuch Studios to reconnect with those groups.

‘More Than Sedentary ‘ (2020-2021)You can watch our dance film by clicking here This project was gratefully funded by DCMS and National Lottery Community Fund.

EveryBody Dances (2018-2021)This project involved outreach performances and workshops in nursing and care homes, working in a dementia friendly way with our members engaging with participants and leading sessions. This was possible thanks to 3 year core funding from Nottinghamshire County Council’s Local Improvement Scheme

‘Dancing Together’ (2018)We worked with Showtime Dance and Sidekick Dance both based in Leicester to create this dance film which you can watch by clicking here We collaborated with film maker Tom Oliver to create the work which was funded by the People’s Postcode Lottery.

‘Moving Beyond Perceptions’ (2016)A photographic exhibit we created in collaboration with award winning Nottingham based photographer David Severn. We shot at various locations in our local area to create work in response to challenging the public’s perceptions of older people dancing. The images can be viewed here The images were toured to local groups accompanied by a live performance and were displayed at College Street Centre. The project was funded by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Arts Grant scheme.

Karla Jones
Dance Lead
I’ve been a dance lead for the group since 2012 and involved as a support artist since it’s creation in 2009. I work with older dancers across the East Midlands having previously led sessions at Attenborough Arts Centre, Leicester and Nottingham Playhouse Theatre. I have lectured at Lincoln and Leicester Universities training dance students in best practice when working with older people. I trained with Diane Amans, a world leader in older people dancing, and Dr Richard Coaten specialising in making sessions dementia friendly. We are very proud of what we offer at Movement for All and we’re always happy to hear from potential new members and supporters, please use the contact us page to get in touch!

Faqs

Q. Am I too old to start dance exercise sessions?A. Some of our members are in their 80’s. They can choose to remain seated and do as much or as little of the session as they wish. Our dance artist is very skilled at helping everyone to feel involved.Q. Do I need to have experience of dance?A. Not at all. Everyone participates at their own level and we never take ourselves too seriously.Q. I have mobility issues. Will I be able to join in?A. We have many members who have a variety of conditions. Upon joining the group our leader is made aware of any issues members may have and is able to accommodate them safely when devising exercises and routines.Q. Do I need to wear special clothes or shoes?A. Just wear comfortable clothes and shoes that are not slippery.Q. What if I do not have my own transport or find public transport difficult?A. We have a free mini bus that will pick up and return you to your house if you have these needs.Q. Do the sessions cater for men as well as women?A. Everyone is welcome.Q. How much do the sessions cost?A. We collect £5 from members and you pay only for the sessions you attend. The sessions and transport are subsidised through our fundraising and if anyone found it difficult to find the subscription we could discuss it in confidence to help an individual to attend.
